Domestic Partnership

Domestic Partnership

A domestic partnership is established when persons meet criteria specified by California Family Code section 297.

The Domestic Partnership registry is intended to assist unmarried couples applying for domestic partnership benefits from employers. The Statement of Domestic Partnership is public record.

Filing for a domestic partnership is NOT the same as filing for a marriage license. Those who are currently in a domestic partnership must complete a statement of termination of domestic partnership if they plan on applying for a marriage license.

Before filing, please read the important notice below.

County Statement of Domestic Partnership:

Beginning May 6, 1999, couples wishing to file a Statement of Domestic Partnership may begin filing with the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's (RR/CC) Office. The Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance for the creation of a centralized registry for domestic partners at the April 6 board meeting. The registry is intended to assist unmarried adult couples applying for domestic partnership benefits from employers. Couples wishing to register must both be 18 years of age or older and at least one partner must reside or work within Los Angeles County.
