Solicitation Alert for Fictitious Business Name (DBA) Renewal

Date: Sep 28, 2011

Many business owners are receiving “official” looking renewal notices for their Fictitious Business Names. These renewal notices ask for fees of up to $139. The Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk has compiled the following information to be sure you are not subjected to unnecessary fees by third-party solicitors.

Filing instructions available here.

  1. A renewal only requires completion of the application and a $26 fee and $5 for each additional business name/registrant.
  2. If you renew before your expiration date, you are not required to publish your business name.
  3. A renewal of a Fictitious Business Name Statement must be filed prior to the date of expiration if you intend to continue doing business under that name and if there are no changes to the original statement.
  4. A Fictitious Business Name Statement expires five years from the date it is filed in the office of the County Clerk. (Business and Professions Code § 17920(a)).
